Born in Bande, in the Galician province of Ourense (16th November 1877 1877) and died in Madrid (6th December 1960), Faustino Santalices is a gem that has luckily been passed down to us whole and unscratched. His work is therefore an exceptional testimony that condenses Galicia’s musical heritage of a good part of the 20th century and, by extension, the cultural framework in which he lived, thus decisively contributing to its conservation and enrichment. Throughout his life, he prided himself on his passionate and vehement nature and generously embraced all the facets relating to traditional music. He was taught to play the bagpipe by Penalta, the bagpipe player. He entered the magical world of the hurdy-gurdy nearly by chance when he heard that sound in the organ of the Cathedral of Santiago and his curiosity took him not only into the theoretical and educational field, but also led to his constructing and perfecting traditional instruments. Special mention should be made of two publications: one on the bagpipe and the other, famous for all the secrets that it brought to life, entitled “La Zanfona” (Hurdy-gurdy) and whose introduction was by the famous writer, Ramón Cabanillas.
The first session took place in 1929, even though other biographies refer to 1927. They were numbers recorded by Regal, where Fasutine Santalices appears singing and playing the hurdy-gurdy in “Canto de Romería” and “Canto de Seitura” and with the bagpipe, accompanied by his inseparable Modesto Sánchez, performing "Muiñeira de Cartelle", "Pasacorredoiras de Arnoia" and "Alborada antiga de Ourense". Many years later in 1949, Faustino Santalices went back to the recording studio. This historic, spectacular and moving recording took place in Calle Colón de Madrid, with no breaks or retouching, and he was nearly 73 years old. His son played the percussion shells at some point in the recording. The myth and the legend emerged out of that session, published by Columbia, as it contained numbers that a true symbol of the expressive wealth of Galician music: "Alalá das mariñas", "Axéitame a polainiña", "Romance de don Gaiferos" to name just a few of many. Two numbers from that session were never published and appear for the first time on this record. Both were pieces for the hurdy-gurdy: "Marcha procesional ( siglo XVI ) Santa Lucía para Rairo" and " Antiga alborada popular galega". Paraphrasing Rosalía de Castro, it can be said that Fasutino Santalices for traditional music “... is everywhere and is everything" . From every Galician, from every musician in the world, from everybody who loves this plant’s thousand traditional universes: thank you, Faustino Santalices. Anton Seoane (Milladoiro) |
